Steve Gaynor – Founder and Managing Partner
MSG Securities is led by Steve Gaynor, who has over thirty years professional experience, and over twenty years in the technology industry. An investment banker, attorney, management consultant and CEO, he brings a wide range of skills to assist clients with building businesses and solving business problems.
Steve graduated from Harvard’s Joint Program in Law and Business, simultaneously earning his MBA and JD (Doctor of Law) degrees. While at Harvard, he interned at McKinsey & Company, and served as an assistant to the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury (Finance Minister).
Upon graduation Steve became a “Wall Street” attorney and investment banker, first with Skadden Arps, a global top-five law firm, and subsequently with the investment bank L.F. Rothschild & Co., where he advised on transactions of all types, including M&A, restructurings, IPOs and secondary equity offerings, and private placements of equity and debt.
Recruited by AirTouch, (now Vodafone), Steve became a leader of its successful international expansion in Asia and Europe. He was a senior member of teams that won the second GSM licenses in Italy and Spain, and served on the Boards of what are today Vodafone Italy and Vodafone Spain.
Following Vodafone’s $62 Billion acquisition of AirTouch, Steve became a Partner at Arthur D. Little, where he served as a senior wireless industry advisor to governments and leading companies and investors, including the Brazilian Government, Sony, Nortel, Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal and several private equity and venture capital funds
Since Arthur D. Little, Steve served as CEO of Unifone, a wireless service provider funded by a $1.7 Billion VC fund, and CEO of Mobliss, a mobile messaging and games company. Both companies were sold. He has been on six boards, of which four companies were acquired, and on several start-up advisory boards.
In addition to holding the MBA and JD degrees, Steve, who started university at 15, graduated with highest honors from Baruch College (CUNY), and earned the Certificate in Telecom Engineering with distinction from U.C. Berkeley. He is a member of the New York Bar, and a registered investment banker holding the Series 62, 63, and 79 licenses. Petri Saarinen – Managing Director, Europe
Petri is an expert at assisting startup and growth technology companies. He has over 25 years experience in operations of engineering, TMT/ICT/Mobile/Gaming and Edtech companies in the European, South American and MENA regions.
Petri was a co-founder of Eduze ZA, Teraloop, and four other companies, and was an Associate Partner at Breadfruit Capital AB. Today, in conjunction with his work for MSG, Petri serves as a startup and ecosystem advisor in the Baltic, Nordic, Russia, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland and GCC/MENA regions. He has received innovation awards from the Shell New Energy Challenge ’18, Demo Africa ‘13, EnergySpin Top30 Energy Startup ’15, ‘17 and Hello Tomorrow Paris ‘16.
Petri holds the B.Sc Eng./B.B.A, and had additional education from LM Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Avaya, SFSU, Mulhouse University, Aalto University, and the Helsinki School of Economics. He is a consultant to MSG Securities.
Thierry Podolak – Managing Director, Europe
Thierry has been in the technology industry for over thirty years, and provides professional financial and consulting advisory services to European investors, start-ups and growth companies. He supports MSG global teams in executing transactions, is also an active angel investor, and currently serves as CFO of Wizzcad, a post series-A portfolio company in the Property Tech industry.
Based in Paris, Thierry is a founder of Menlo Business Partners operations in Europe, now working with MSG Securities. His background includes senior executive positions in the telecom and wireless industry as Managing Director of Altice, COO of Completel, COO of B3G, and Product/Marketing Director in Alcatel’s wireless business.
Thierry graduated from both the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris) and ENST-Paris (formerly the École Nationale Supérieure des Telecommunications). He also followed the Executive Development Program in Finance at INSEAD (France). Thierry is a consultant to MSG Securities.
Patrick Nguyen – Managing Director
Patrick Nguyen leads MSG’s Silicon Valley practice and provides strategic advisory and business development services for early stage technology companies focused on mobile, IOT, fintech, SaaS, cloud, enterprise, software infrastructure, social, Internet services, marketplaces and consumer products.
He has over 25 years of experience and has advised on 40+ M&As and 60+ strategic business development transactions involving emerging companies with many of world’s largest companies including Apple, Cisco, Comcast, HP, Facebook, Microsoft, News Corp, Orange, Panasonic, Qualcomm, RBS, Reuters, Samsung, Sony, Softbank, Telefonica, Time Warner, and Vodafone. Having been an entrepreneur who co-founded two startups, led another to an IPO, and grew several startups to successfully achieve M&As, Patrick is passionate about helping founders and investors pursue the best strategy for capital raising, strategic business development, and M&A transactions.
Prior to joining MSG, Patrick was CEO & Founder of Amusing Quest, VP of Business Development at SugarSync, and Co-Founder & VP of Business Development at Xumii. He spent nine years as an EVP of Corporate Development at two public companies – Liberate Technologies and InterTrust, where he led the company to a successful IPO that later reached a market cap of $9B. Patrick started his career in law and became partner and Head of the Corporate Transactions and M&A practice in Silicon Valley for Weil, Gotshal& Manges, one of the largest international law firms.
Patrick has a B.S. in Computer Science from University of California Irvine and a J.D. from UCLA School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. Patrick has been a member of the California Bar since 1991.
Masaru Sakamoto – Advisor for Asia
Mas is based in Tokyo and Silicon Valley, and supports MSG global teams in Asia. He brings a wealth of experience in Pacific Rim business ranging from cross-border M&A, business strategy planning, venture capital investing, business incubation and business partnerships.
He has held senior executive positions at NEC Corporation, as well as board positions at for and non-profit firms such as Niteo Partners, The Enterprise Network, Vidient Systems, Ecoplexus Japan and Sustainable Silicon Valley, where he was chairman. Mas is a graduate in economics at Keio University, and earned his MBA at Harvard Business School.
Ted Bernstein – Managing Member & CEO, Bernstein Williams + Co.
Ted is an accomplished health care / life sciences, finance, and lawyer-business leader. His background includes more than 25 years of senior executive positions at leading organizations including: Massachusetts General Hospital; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Wasserstein Perella & Co.; and Avenue Capital Group, among others.
He is an investment banker (holding the Series 7 and 63 licenses), and a licensed attorney and real estate broker in New York State. Ted is a graduate of both the University of Chicago’s Law School (JD) and Booth School of Business (MBA), Yale University´s School of Public Health (MPH), and The Johns Hopkins University (BA, Natural Sciences). Bobbi Babitz – Partner – Britehorn
Bobbi is a founding partner of Britehorn. She brings over twenty years of private equity and transactional experience in high-growth companies in both the public and private capital markets.
Over the course of her career, she has served as banker, advisor, principal investor, board member, and interim management for companies in a wide range of industries with an emphasis on media, technology, business services, and healthcare.
Prior to founding Britehorn, Bobbi served as a principal of lower middle market private equity firm Mercantile Capital Group where she sourced, structured, and added value to portfolio investments.
Before joining Mercantile, Bobbi was a biotech research analyst with Union Bank of Switzerland Lifescience Group. She started her financial career with Trebol, the U.S. investment arm of Argentine private bank Banco General de Negocios.
Brett Story – Partner – Britehorn
Brett is a founding partner of Britehorn and a seasoned investment banker and corporate attorney with extensive transaction advisory experience.
Prior to Britehorn, Brett was Director of Corporate Finance with the Denver-based investment bank Janco Partners, where he managed the firm’s technology and media banking practice.
Before Janco, he was a Director at Legacy Wealth Partners, an alternative investment and asset management boutique. Brett has practiced in Miami and Denver as an M&A attorney, most recently with Minor & Brown.
Brett holds a BA from the University of Richmond and a JD from the University of Miami School Of Law.
Andrew Hurry – Partner – Britehorn
Andrew is a Managing Director with Britehorn with over 25 years of strategic advisory and transactional experience. His strengths include applying a unique combination of a pragmatic, scientific, engineering and finance background to complex situations across telecom, environmental, healthcare, and other industries.
His recent projects include his role as Financial Consultant to Huntsville Utility for the development of a citywide fiber network and its resultant first-of-a-kind contract with Google Fiber.
Andrew spent 10 years as Senior Investment Banker at The Yale Group. Prior to The Yale Group, Andrew was a principal at Grayson & Associates, a merchant banking firm focusing on medical-related technology investments. Before Grayson, he was a Senior Project Manager in Europe for global environmental consulting firms, with his role focusing on business development, environmental due diligence, and natural resource development.
Andrew holds an MBA from the University of London, England, an M.Sc. from University College London, and a B.Sc. from the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
